AHIMA - CoP

American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
AHIMA is the professional association that represents more than 40,000 specially educated health information management professionals who work throughout the healthcare industry. Health information management professionals serve the healthcare industry and the public by managing, analyzing, and utilizing data vital for patient care -- and making it accessible to healthcare providers when it is needed most. ILHIMA is one of 52 component state associations of AHIMA.

American Hospital Association/Health Forum
Coding resource center for the HIM professional. Use this site to find information on ICD medical codes, coding advice, guidelines, references and updates for HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and ICD-10-PCS medical coding classification systems.

Computerized Prescription Record
CPR.net offers a Computerized Prescription Record and links to medical information on the Internet.

Greater Chicagoland Chapter of HIMSS
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society provides leadership in healthcare for the management of technology information and change through publications, educational opportunities and member services. HIMSS has more than 43 chapters, one of which is the Greater Chicagoland Chapter.

ILHIMA Community of Practice (CoP)
Enter your membership ID number and your last name. Go to the “Geographic-Illinois” Community.

Use the CoP to communicate with Illinois members around a particular topic, benchmark practices, ask for advice, share documents, or participate in a chat. The ILHIMA CoP is in beta testing. Visit us during the test phase and let us know what you think.

Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services
An Illinois agency that administers the state’s Medical Assistance Programs, including managed care, Medicaid, Medicare, supportive living, KidCare, and nursing homes. This site provides information about these programs, as well as a link to the Illinois Office of Inspector General which deals with fraud and abuse.

Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH)
This agency promotes health through the prevention and control of disease and injuries in the state of Illinois. The agency has multiple programs. Select the “A-Z topics” selection off the menu on the IDPH home page to find valuable sites. Here are some of interest to HIM professionals:

Illinois Foundation for Quality Health Care (IFQHC)
The federally designated peer review organization (PRO) for Medicare in Illinois. This organization administers programs designed to assist physicians, other providers, and health care facilities in their efforts to improve the quality of care for Medicare beneficiaries.

Illinois Health Care Cost Containment Council (IHCCCC)
Up until June 28, 2002 this agency was responsible for collecting, analyzing and reporting health care costs and utilization data from Illinois hospitals. Effective July 1, 2002 this responsibility was transferred to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Useful information is still available on the IHCCCC website.

Illinois Hospital Association (IHA)
This association represents hospitals and health systems, as well as patients and communities, by advocating on behalf of these groups. This web site is a good source of information about legislative and regulatory activities important to the healthcare field. Information about COMPdata is also available here.

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
The Joint Commission evaluates and accredits nearly 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States and is the nation’s predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in health care. Get accreditation standards or learn about the ORYX initiative launched in 1997 to integrate the use of outcomes and other performance measures into the accreditation process.

Metropolitan Chicago Health Care Council (MCHC)
MCHC is a membership and service association composed of nearly 130 hospitals and health care organizations working together, since 1935, to improve the delivery of health care services in the Chicago area. You can find news on your local hospital or health care organizations by using their alphabetical index.
